20 May, 2024Commissioning of the Nemmeli desalination plant in India
The Nemmeli Desalination Plant, a flagship project in India’s seawater treatment sector, has been officially launched. Developed by Tedagua and Tecton for the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), the plant boasts a production capacity of 150,000 m³ per day, providing clean drinking water to over a million people. The inauguration ceremony was led by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who conducted a thorough inspection of the facilities and the water production process.
This plant is noteworthy for its robust design, featuring a versatile pre-treatment system that adapts to varying water qualities and sudden changes in the influent, all while maintaining low energy consumption to reduce its carbon footprint. The project also includes a marine intake structure with a 1 km inlet pipe and a 600 m outfall. The water produced will be distributed across 14 urban areas in southern Chennai, particularly benefiting densely populated regions with limited access to quality water. Operated for 20 years, this initiative is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for the local population.
